Finding people with tuberculosis

Around 1 in 3 people with tuberculosis does not access diagnosis and treatment, and it is urgent that we find all the people with tuberculosis and ensure their right to care.

Key interventions are ranging from door- to door visits and small information meetings at village level, to large screening sessions with a mobile clinic. We always work closely with the public health system and refer people with symptoms to the health facility, or transport sputum samples to the nearest laboratory. In some areas these referrals contribute to around 30% of all people diagnosed.

LHL Internationals work focus on screening key populations with high risk of tuberculosis, and poor access to health services, such as for example prison inmates, miners and people who use drugs. In many places, the tuberculosis burden is more than 10 times higher in these groups than the general population.
