In Romania we have had several projects since 2015, mostly focusing on support to people on treatment for drug resistant tuberculosis, and capacity building of health care workers in health communication.
Romania has the highest burden of tuberculosis among the EU- countries, and the main challenges have been lack of access to second line drugs, inadequate follow up of people on treatment for drug resistant tuberculosis and poor treatment outcomes.
Our main partners are the Association for Supporting Patients with Drug Resistant Tuberculosis (ASPTMR). ASPTMR was established in 2011 of people affected by drug resistant tuberculosis. Together, we have had several trainings of health workers, including medical doctors and psychologists, in people centered care and how to communicate with people affected by tuberculosis. We have also developed easy- to read information brochures for people on treatment.
Other partners are Marius Nasta Institute who coordinates the national tuberculosis program.
The projects in Romania have been funded by EEA and Norway grants (2015-20)
Tuberculosis, including drug resistant tuberculosis, is increasing in Europe, and for the first time in two decades, tuberculosis mortality is also on the rise. There is a need to think and act differently and work closely together - both government and civil society, and across countries - to stop the spread of the disease and ensure the rights of people with tuberculosis.
This project invites representatives from nine countries (Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Poland, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Romania and Ukraine) to a tuberculosis conference in Oslo in October 2024 to discuss People centered care and Barriers and best practices related to tuberculosis care for refugees and migrants in Europe.
This conference will lay the foundation for a collaborative network among the nine countries. The network will have regular digital meetings and share challenges and best practices in tuberculosis prevention and care in the region.
This project is funded by Norwegian Ministry of Health and Care services (2024-2026)
