Latvia is among the tuberculosis high priority countries in the WHO EURO region. The estimated tuberculosis incidence is 5 times that of Norway, and the number of people with tuberculosis have increased slightly in the last years. There is also a challenge with people that are not able to complete the long antibiotic treatment, especially for drug resistant tuberculosis - risking further increase in antibiotic resistance.
Many of the people affected by tuberculosis in Latvia have one or more risk factors: homelessness, substance use, smoking, unemployment, imprisonment, psychological problems, and HIV. These groups are hard to reach, come late for diagnosis, and struggle to adhere to treatment. Together with the partner organization Latvian Society Against Tuberculosis (LSATB), the project will improve care and treatment adherence by introducing new tools such as training of health workers in effective health communication, VDOT (video observed treatment to monitor medicine intake, side effects and needs for social support), and nutritional support.
This project is funded by Norwegian Ministry of Health and Care services (2024-2026)
