Our people

LHL International have a small and very engaged team of eight people based in Oslo, Norway. In Norway we also have a group of volunteers working as peers (people affected by tuberculosis). They visit people on tuberculosis treatment at the hospital or home and are important in sharing information about tuberculosis.

Outside Norway, we have local partners in Malawi, Tanzania, Sudan, Zambia, Romania, Poland and Latvia.

Paradiso TB Patient Trust, Malawi

Paradiso is an organization of people affected by tuberculosis. It was founded in 2003 by Mara Banda and is situated in Lilongwe. Today they work in six regions and have more than 3000 members. Paradiso do a great job to find people with symptoms of tuberculosis in their community and care for the sick, including orphans.  They are important champions for people with tuberculosis associated disabilities in Malawi and are the first to implement community-based lung rehabilitation in Malawi.

MKUTA TB Patient organization, Tanzania

MKUTA has developed from a small tuberculosis patient organization in Dar Es Salaam to become a nationwide organization with more than 3000 members. They play a key role in tuberculosis in Tanzania, screening around a million people a year and reaching out to vulnerable populations such as drug users and miners. MKUTA are important advocates for people affected by tuberculosis and influence policy development in the country.

Temeke Municipality, Tanzania

Temeke Municipality is one of five municipalities in Dar Es Salaam with a population of about 1,3 million people. Capacity building of the health facilities combined with close cooperation with the community, such as MKUTA TB Patient organization, has ensured great tuberculosis treatment results. Temeke also do tuberculosis screening in the prison and have implemented lung rehabilitation for people with post- tuberculosis lung disease together with MKUTA.

Kibong’oto Infectious Disease Hospital, Tanzania

Kibong’oto Infectious Disease Hospital (KIDH) is a specialized hospital and research institution in Kilimanjaro in northern Tanzania. Starting out as a sanatorium in 1926, they are now the center of excellence for drug resistant tuberculosis in the country. Situated in an area with many tanzanite and gold mines, KIDH has over the years increased their outreach activities to screen and treat miners for  tuberculosis and silicosis, including lung rehabilitation together with the local MKUTA branches.

Health Development Program (HDP), Sudan

HDP is a large organization in Sudan, with more than 27 000 members across all 18 states. HDP works to support people affected by tuberculosis and HIV, and they play an important role in creating awareness and reducing stigma, for example through street theatre. HDP also focus on the rights of women, refugees, and people with disabilities. Due to conflict and coups in Sudan HDPs work is very challenging, but they continue to play a key role in ensuring the right to health in the country.

In But Free, Zambia

In But Free is a small rights-based organization that has worked in Zambian prisons since 1995. Today, they are present in 13 correctional facilities across 3 provinces in the country. By empowering prison inmates as peers, they ensure tuberculosis screening and HIV voluntary testing for everyone in the prison and provides nutritional support and care to the sick. They also focus on mental health for the inmates.  In But Free is a key national stakeholder for the right to health for people that are incarcerated and for people living in refugee camps and congregate settings.

Association for Supporting MDR-TB Patients (ASPTMR), Romania

ASPTMR was established in 2011 by people with drug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB). They support people who are on treatment, and ensures that their medical, psychological and social needs are taken care of.  This includes increasing the knowledge about tuberculosis and health communication for health workers and volunteers.

ASPTMR has become a recognized contributor to the field of tuberculosis in Romania and are important advocates towards the government for the rights of people with tuberculosis, including ensuring the adoption of the tuberculosis law in Romania in 2018.

Foundation for Social Education (FES), Poland

FES has worked to increase society's knowledge about social problems and public health since 2004. They conduct educational activities in the field of mental and psychosexual health, especially targeting people who use drugs and other key and vulnerable populations in Poland. FES offer free and anonymous testing for HIV and Hepatitis C, as well as tuberculosis prevention and care services

Latvian Society Against Tuberculosis, Latvia

LSATB (Latvian Society Against Tuberculosis) was established as a foundation in 1923 and is a one of the oldest non-profit organizations in Latvia. The members are people affected by tuberculosis and tuberculosis professionals. LSATB main objectives is to contribute to the tuberculosis control in Latvia, they raise awareness about tuberculosis and lung health to the public and tuberculosis patients, they support and provide capacity building of health care professionals involved in  tuberculosis care.
